Frostfoot slipped through the crevice in the rockface into the den. The musky scent of herbs filled his scent glands as he inhaled deeply, filling him with a warmth he hadn't felt in a while. Moonglow's scent also hung thickly throughout the front den and the tunnel that led to the sleeping quarters at the back. His tabby fur brushed alongside the stony wall, picking up the scent that coated the walls. His whiskers quivered as he glanced back, eyeing the entrance that led out into the frosty, winter world, before he turned his attention to the medicine cat's den.
As he passed by the shelves that were decorated with the assorted dried leaves, berries and other herbs that came with his new job, his thoughts wandered to Silentsong. Was her den organized like this? Where was her den? He realized he had never visited the SparkClan camp before, so he could not know. But now that they were both medicine cats, perhaps he could visit her?
No.
He knew that his loyalities would not allow it. Neither would Silentsong's father, if he was still alive. Would Silentsong appreciate it? Probably not - Frostfoot didn't even know if the pain was killing her as well, or if she had forgetten about him just as quickly. He would never know.
Anyways, his life had long since passed her by, as her's had eventually passed his by.
This was his life now, he thought, as he slipped into the small cave just off the main den, which led to his new den. He spotted a nest of moss and soft ferns by the corner; his new bed. Without question, the tabby slipped over to it, his white paws gliding over the gray stone with sweet, silent kisses.
The new medicine cat of SnowClan, his short fur bristling over his flanks, settled into the nest, curling his tail over his pink nose. He blinked his amythest-glazed eyes close, and calmed his mind, removing the beautiful she-cat of his dreams from his mind. Frostfoot knew what needed to be done - and she was no longer part of his life, despite every trace of her in his home; the herbs, the memories.
Because, this was his new home.
Thick mist shrouded the tom, hugging his body tightly. His tail twisted, before it reached up above the fog. The next moment, it was gone, as if it never were. "My first dream...?" Frostfoot meowed quietly, glancing around, his brilliant eyes bright.
"Yes, Frostfoot," a warm voice responded from behind him. The tabby glanced over his shoulder, but he could not see anything. "This is your first dream as SnowClan's medicine cat. I'm pleased to see you are the one who has taken my position." Now, the tom could identify the feminine lilt that wove through the air as Moonglow's.
"Moonglow!" he purred, and she slipped from the ferns by his side. Her short fur glowed as if some great leader had ordered warriors to capture the stars in her pelt; the veil of stardust was hypnotizing as each individual diamond-flint winked at him welcomingly. "It's great to see you again!"
She smiled, purring. Her gray tabby fur rippled as she padded forward to stand before him. Frostfoot dipped his head in greeting, though she did not reply. His other worries were cast from his mind as he wondered what would happen know.
"Frostfoot, I'm sure you know the urgency for a trained medicine cat for your Clan," Moonglow continued, her eyes bright. "But before we can begin your training, you must recieve your name before StarClan.
"Unfortunately, time is running short and so we cannot wait until the next half moon; tonight, you will have to make your way to Star Island to meet with StarClan. Afterwards, we can begin your training in dreams; if you have any urgent matters to take care of, the other medicine cats are willing to help." She paused, and Frostfoot wondered if she knew his secret as both cats quickly thought of the other medicine cats. Frostfoot flicked his torn ear, chasing away any thoughts of Silentsong as he pulled his attention back to his new-found mentor.
"Thank-you, Moonglow," Frostfoot meowed solemnly, purple irises glittering as he gazed at her.
She shook her head, declining the grateful words.
"You have no need to thank me," she purred in reply. "I think you were meant for this role - when you were a kit, and I'm not sure if you remember this, but you were quite curious to know the herbs and their uses when I treated your ear." This brought a smile to both their faces, though Frostfoot did not remember this. Weird, for he thought he would never forget the day the owl had attacked him - the deadly screech, the seering pain, the horror that chilled him, his father's rescue...
"For now, though," Moonglow continued, her words jolting him back to the reality of his dream, "I have to leave you. I have no doubt you will settle well into this new life."
Frostfoot nodded in understanding, leaning forward to touch his muzzle to her cheek; she returned the gesture. Moonglow then turned and leapt away, her long tail twitching in farewell, her fur glittering like the stars themselves. Frostfoot watched her go, before feeling something hitch just past his shoulders - and then he found himself in the waking world once more.
